On a trip to the waterfront, Mrs. Feeley, Mrs. Rasmussen, and Miss Tinkham befriend the kindhearted, if somewhat gruff, Captain Dowdy. When he takes them up on their invitation for dinner that evening, he brings the bad news that his crew has been locked up and he’s clueless about what to do for his big charter the following day. Of course Mrs. Feeley and friends can’t leave him in need. But little do they know they’re sailing into a tangled web of romance and conspiracy full of scheming villains and even a princess!

Mary Lasswell’s fifth book of exploits to feature Mrs. Feeley and company is brimming with fun, adventure, and an inspirational passion for life. This feel-good book is bound to make some waves, so be sure to read it schooner rather than later.

I first ran across this series of books long, long ago, when I was a pre-teen, and found my mother's copy of "Suds In Your Eye." They made me laugh until tears ran down my face, and I have never stopped finding laughter, joy, and yes, a sense of I-can-do-it, fortitude and strength, to say nothing of creative, common sense problem solving rivaling any Ph. D.'s pathetic book larnin'. There is no dilemma too thorny, no disaster too ghastly, no person too lost for the three ladies (and yes, never think they don't maintain all the highest standards of ladyship at all times and under the harshest of circumstances.)

When I was a little older I joined the Navy, and my greatest anticipatory goal was to find the San Diego bar with the magical tropical rainstorm crashing, rain cascading down in torrents, as thunder rumbled in the background. It took a while, but one day...Oh, joy! I walked in and there it was, probably looking (and smelling)exactly as it did when the ladies swanned in with their flowers, enchanting the lonesome Fleet Sailors, and staving off the tax man one more time. I was thrilled beyond words, and asked the bar tender if he'd read the books, positive no thinking person would have missed such literary treasures. He hadn't. And further more had no interest in learning his bar had played such a pivotal role in such a wonderful epic tale. I didn't even finish my pricey rot gut in the smudged glass, and I never set foot in that place again for the duration of my entire tour, even though it was only a couple of blocks from my duty station. Still, I was enchanted to find my office directly across the street from the tuna factory, then cleverly disguised as Commandant, 12th Naval District Headquarters. My home was quite possibly located in the area where the glorious beer can fence of the Ark once gleamed in the sun, and Tooner Schooner's little craft certainly was moored somewhere along the waterfront. The images and stories gifted me by Mary Lasswell's books made my tour in San Diego special and unforgettable.

I've read the entire series repeatedly, and I search for, and buy, all the books of the series I run across, as I've done for many years. They're increasingly scarce, especially the ones from the war years, when paper was scarce and precious. While I've read many thousands of books since, none have ever held their place in my heart as these Lasswell books have. I put together sets and give them as precious gifts to my most special friends, all of whom have found them as rare and magnificent literary heart jewels as I do. I am old now, perhaps more so than those ladies who grace the pages of the series, but I still revel in the world spinning on that special axis contained within Tooner Schooner and the other beloved books in the series. Thank you, Mary Lasswell, for creating a place and people who have given me a life time's worth of joy and inspiration. I hope when I die I find them, still rollicking on, perhaps still making do in their mansion at the crossroads of the forgotten freeway off ramp and the bypassed old road.

Tooner Schooner edition by Mary Lasswell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Great Book!
I really enjoyed this book. I have read of all Mary Lasswell's "Suds in Your Eye" series. I have enjoyed all of these books, but my very favorite is "Let's Go for Broke".
The true friendship and comedy with a delightful mix of mischief and hard work made this book a treasure to read. Very entertaining and suspenseful, I would love these ladies as neighbors!! Thank you GG for starting me on the Suds series💚
By the author of Suds in Your Eye, High Time, One on the House, Wait for the Wagon, and Let's Go For Broke. A terrific series about three ladies of a certain age, unlikely friends, who combine love of a good time with many adventures. Hilarious. Tooner Schooner is worth reading for the Maine accent alone.
The gals beloved home in their San Diego junkyard has burned to the ground and they must make ends meet by cooking for a charter boat. This is the fifth book in the "Suds" series and it is just not up to the caliber of the first three books. Is it the innocence that is missing?
"Suds in Your Eye" was written in 1942 and this book in 1953. . maybe the three ladies are better suited to the WWII era.
I actually have the series in hard back. The books are old and delicate. Not always PC for this century but a wonderful view of the times from a contemporary point of view. The ladies and their adventures are a fun read. Like famous movie lines - you will find your self using Mrs. Feeley phrases like Corned Beef and Garbage or it goes good with beer.
Mrs. Feeley and her friends become acquainted with Captain Dowdy (known affectionately as Tooner Schooner) and wind up crewing for him. Bedlam ensues when the ladies decide to help Tooner extricate himself from his estranged wife so he can marry his true love.

This is the fourth book in the Suds series and was published in 1953. So take into account the dated references, and just enjoy the characters! Mrs. Feeley has a heart big enough for all, and her friends, Mrs. Rasmussen and Miss Tinkham, are there to aid and abet their adventures. Just treat yourself and enjoy the series.
